CLEAN UP

PROTECT YOURSELF
:
• ONLY ENTER inspected buildings. Do not wander in the dark. Do not go alone.

• WEAR protective clothing: gloves, masks, tyvek suits, boots. and respirators if there is mold. The water and material can contain harmful substances, chemicals, mold and dangerous items- like nails.

• VACCINATE if you are cut by detritus or come in contact with water or human feces with tetanus boosters and hepatitis A+B.

TURN OFF
the main power to protect yourself and your service as the circuits dry out

ELIMINATE MOLD
: it develops from bacteria in the water and will ruin your home

• VENTILATE and DRY by opening the house to the air if possible. Dehumidifiers and heaters can speed the process

• DISINFECT all surfaces with 1/4 cup chlorine bleach to 1 gallon water

• REMOVE ALL WET CONTENTS even if you think it can be salvaged, do not leave it in the house to dry.

• DISCARD all impacted food products

• DRY OUT your walls and floors remove baseboard drill holes in plaster walls 2” above floor discard wet gypsum board to at least a foot above water level discard wet batt and blown insulation remove and clean rigid insulation
pry panelling at bottom to allow air behind it

REBUILD BETTER

WATER PROOF better:
• use pressure treated lumber
• use non-paper faced gypsum
• use cement board
• use marine-core plywood
• use closed cell insulation ( not batt)
• use vinyl tile ( not linoleum)
• raise outlets and utilities
• vent the walls to prevent mildew
• place “sacrificial’ use and finish on the ground
• install flood proof grates and covers on foundation wall openings

SUPPORT better:
for water and wind with
• adequate foundation depth and reinforcing
• adequate anchors and bracing
• adequate nail and screw configuration
• hurricane shutters and performance glazing
• professional advice on all structural issues

POWER better
:
• separate electrical distribution above and below the Design Flood Elevation
• Install a sub panel with GFI breakers below the Design Flood Elevation
• consider emergency power generation by gas or gasoline
• consider photovoltaic +battery for emergency light (not heat)

HEAT better:
• raise equipment off floor or to next floor
• consider high efficiency systems like:
VRV electric heat pump (can run on
emergency power)
Gas fired hydronic
Solar Thermal for Hot Water

PLUMB better
:
• install sewage back flow preventer
• install low flow fixtures

BUILD BACK BETTER BIBLIOGRAPHY
